Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language.
Oracy skills are a vital part of learning and are essential in meeting the aims of the National Curriculum. The English curriculum states that pupils should be taught to ‘speak clearly, fluently and with confidence in any situation, including presenting and debating’. Speaking and listening objectives are also set within the English programme of study.
At Hall Green Infants the vision for Oracy is to ensure that every child is able to use their voice to express themselves effectively in order to be their best, both academically and beyond the classroom.
Oracy Framework
In order to teach effective oracy skills across the curriculum, we will be using the oracy framework to understand the physical, linguistic, cognitive, and social and emotional skills that our children need to develop in order to deal with a range of different talk situations.
All objectives are progressive as previous skills are built upon and student-friendly so children gain a clear understanding of all the strands.
We teach the skills of these strands in many different ways at school.
We use:
Paired talk
Group discussion
Hot seating
Debating
Drama/Role play
Presentations
Oral book reviews
Assemblies
What to do at home?
Below are weekly oracy challenges for you to have a go at. We want parents and children to get involved.
If you would like to send any videos of your oracy please send them to enquiry@hallgreen-inf.bham.sch.uk.
Happy talking!
