At The Nest, we use Makaton to help support communication and give every child a voice. Makaton is a communication programme that combines speech, signs and symbols to help children understand language and express their wants, needs, thoughts and feelings.
We use Makaton alongside spoken language throughout the school day, including during songs, stories, play and everyday routines. Using signs and symbols alongside speech can help make communication clearer, support understanding and encourage children to develop their own communication skills.
Every child communicates in their own way, and Makaton can help us celebrate and support these individual differences. It can reduce frustration, build confidence, encourage independence and help children feel understood, included and valued.
We also encourage our families to use Makaton at home, helping children practise their communication skills in familiar environments with the people who know them best.
