We use the Nelson Handwriting Scheme to support children to develop their handwriting. Nelson Handwriting is a whole-school programme designed to help all children develop a confident, legible and personal handwriting style and meet higher curriculum expectations. Part of Nelson English Skills, the programme includes resources for pattern practice and motor skills work as well as fun activities to bring handwriting to life.
How we teach
Lessons are taught regularly across school. Each lesson begins with a fun warm-up videos to help get children ready for writing through some gross and fine motor exercises, they then begin their handwriting session moving through a progressive programme which builds systematically. When children are ready and have progressed through the scheme well, which is usually in year 2 children are taught how to join their letters together to support them to develop a fluent script.
