Summer Term

We’ve had a fantastic Summer Term filled with fun, laughter, and lots of learning. It’s been amazing to see how much the children have grown throughout the year — they’re more than ready for a well-earned break and excited to continue their learning journey in Year 2. Keep scrolling to see all the wonderful things we’ve been up to this term!

Oracy Workshop

Word Play Festival

We had the Word Play Festival happening at school this week, and the children had the exciting opportunity to meet some incredible authors who came to share their stories with us. They spoke about their journeys to becoming writers and illustrators, inspiring the children to see that they, too, could follow in their footsteps. In the afternoons, we had lots of fun creating and writing our own stories. The children also enjoyed designing imaginative front covers and bringing their characters to life through art and storytelling.

We visited our local Gurdwara on Stratford Road to learn more about religion and explore Sikhism. The children were full of excitement, especially during the bus journey there and back! In the days leading up to the trip, we spent a few afternoon lessons learning about Sikhism, which helped the children feel prepared and curious. During the visit, they were incredibly respectful, listened attentively, and asked thoughtful questions — showing real interest and enthusiasm for what they were learning.

Sports Week

Sports Day finally arrived at Hall Green Infants School, and the children absolutely loved every moment! With the sun shining, they came dressed in their sporty summer outfits, ready for an action-packed week leading up to the big event. We kicked off the week with mindful activities to help ease them into the spirit of Sports Day. The children took part in various circuits, working together as a team and competing in a range of challenges including running, throwing, catching, and balancing. Later in the week, they enjoyed a lively Zumba session, dancing the afternoon away, playing limbo, and joining in with other fun games. The highlight of the week was meeting a famous athlete, Abbie Brown, from the England Women’s Rugby Team, who is also an Olympian! The children were starstruck and inspired as they learned new rugby skills and even played a match coached by her.

The Squirrels wrapped up the year with an adventurous trip to Castle Bromwich Forest School. It was a fantastic day, made even better by the bright sunshine. The children threw themselves into the mud kitchen activities, mixing ingredients to create a fun and imaginative menu: snail soup for starters, wormy spaghetti for the main course, and a tasty leafy apple pie for dessert. Some of the children used branches to build a cosy tent, creating a cool, shaded spot away from the sun. Others relaxed on the picnic blanket, sketching wonderful pictures of the nature and scenery around them. Everyone enjoyed exploring the forest school and discovering the hidden treasures of Mother Nature. We even stumbled upon a secret playground, where the children had a fantastic time swinging, climbing, and balancing on the equipment. It was the perfect opportunity for them to monkey around while strengthening their balance and supporting their physical development. To end the day, we gathered around a campfire to share stories, read books, and enjoy a little snack together.
