Working with a Local Artist - ChickenWIRED February 2026

This week Year One worked with an artist to create our new learning behaviour dinosaurs sculptures. Discovering the enchanting world of ChickenWIRED – where the art of sculpture comes to life using the versatile medium of chicken wire. Unleashing creativity with simple tools and easy techniques that open a realm of crafting possibilities limited only by their imagination. Children worked together to create display pieces for school. Children explored the work of an artist and maker. They were guided in the skills required to explore, analyse, and discuss art and be encouraged to combine their knowledge of what constitutes art, specific artists, and techniques with their own experiences to evaluate artworks and to inform their own creative practices.

Daytime Sleepover February 2026

We had a lovely day celebrating 'reading for pleasure'. Our day focussed on the perfect bedtime story. In the morning, we wrote about our perfect bedtime story and then we designed and decorated pillowcases to match. We used textile pens to add colour. They looked fabulous! In the afternoon, we invited our parents/carers to join us for bedtime stories. We got comfy in our PJs with blankets, slippers, dressing gowns and torches. We listened to our class teacher read a story and then enjoyed chocolate milk whilst reading more stories with our parents/carers. The fairy lights and cosy dens made it magical. Thank you to parents/carers for joining us. It has been a busy spring term so far, we hope you have a restful break!

Number Day January February 2026

Today we wore number inspired outfits. We took part in fun maths activities and had a teacher swap for an exciting maths blast!

Vocabulary Day January 2026

To promote Oracy in school and help create language-rich classrooms, we hosted a vocabulary day at school. It was a fun way to celebrate our love of wonderful words and varied vocabulary. We wore outfits to represent our words and displayed what we dressed up as by having a sign around our necks or a hat with the word on. We had an assembly in the hall and presented our words to the rest of Year One.

Sparkle and Shine Week January 2026

Mindful Monday

On Monday, we listened to the story ‘Rainbow of Emotions’. Mindfulness is taking notice of how your body feels and what you see, smell and taste. We feel a range of big emotions everyday- every feeling is okay.

Thankful Tuesday

On Tuesday, we discussed the importance of saying thank you and being grateful. We decorated thank you cards to give to someone we are grateful for.

Wellbeing Wednesday

On Wednesday, we celebrated something that makes us all happy, our friends! We made colourful friendship bracelets, which we sold at our fundraising event.

Thriving Thursday

On Thursday, we focused on boosting our mood by taking brain breaks, these included; dancing, yoga, mindfulness breathing, meditation and mindful looking.

Aspirations Week January 2026

The world is a fast-changing place. We want to prepare our children not for the world we live in today, but for the world as it will be when they finish their education. This year, as part of our Aspirations week we have discussed with the children what they aspire to do and be in the future. We have explored our school aspirations to help us learn and grow together to lead meaningful lives and make a positive contribution to the global community. We enjoyed our parent workshops at the start of the week, where we focused on our school aspirations ‘Believe in myself and my dreams’ and ‘Achieve my best’. During the workshop, the children and parents/carers discussed ideas to help generate short term goals and long-term goals. On Friday, we wore our aspiration t-shirts and had some visitors tell us about their jobs/careers. It was so inspiring!

Christmas Week December 2025

During Christmas Week, we enjoyed a festive time learning all about Christmas and how different families celebrate in their own special ways. The children explored a variety of traditions, shared their experiences and took part in lots of creative activities. We made beautiful Christmas decorations, created our own calendars and proudly performed our cheerful Christmas sing-along for everyone to enjoy. To round off the celebrations, we finished the week with a fun Christmas party full of laughter, games and seasonal treats. A wonderful way to end a very special week together.

Monster Phonic Workshop November 2025

As part of our school focus to ensure our children become fluent and confident readers, we invited parents to a phonics workshop. The workshop outlined the importance of phonics and how we learn to read at our school. We spoke about the Year One Screening Check and introduced parents to some of the activities and strategies we use in our phonics lessons. Thank you to the parents who attended the workshop, we hope you found it useful.

Memory Box Project October 2025

Our class made beautiful memory boxes as part of their history homework this half term. They were so special, full of sentimental and precious items from the past. The children shared things such as old toys, photographs, letters, drawings and other trinkets that their families had kept to remember important milestones. Thank you for putting in so much effort to make these memory boxes and present them to the class.

Diwali October 2025

During Arts Week we have taken part in Diwali themed arts and crafts. On Monday we made clay pinch pots, we decorated our Diwali lamps with colourful gems and jewels. Later in the week we made Diwali cards as part of our DT lesson. Our cards had a slot slider on the cover to make the image move! At the end of the week we drew chalk fireworks, created beautiful mehndi patterns and made rangoli art out of 2D shapes.

World Mental Health Day October 2025

Today is world mental health day, we wore bright colours to spread positivity and happiness. We discussed that mental health is about how we think, feel and act. Just like physical health, we all have mental health and need to take care of it. We spoke about strategies to have a positive mental health e.g. mindful colouring, playing with friends, meditation, dance, and talking about our feelings. We took part in some of these activities this afternoon. This linked to our school aspiration; healthy mind!

Care for your Bear October 2025

Today was care for your bear day, we discussed our school values: kind me, respectful me, honest me and confident me. This afternoon we shared how we care for our bears and we took part in some lovely activities. It was so nice for our bears to meet each other and spend the day in school together. They particularly enjoyed their fish and chips lunch!

Botanical Gardens September 2025

Year One visited the botanical gardens in Edgbaston. We started the day by meeting lots of fascinating animals. These included a giant snail named Kevin, a bearded dragon, a stick insect, a cockroach, and a snake! After that, we went to the glass houses, we ticked off the different things we could see on our clipboards. We saw tropical and desert plants. There were also some beautiful flowers. In the afternoon we had a plant workshop. We learnt about the different parts of a plant and what plants need to grow. We even dressed up as a bee and two flowers to demonstrate the movement of pollen.

Class Charter September 2025

The children explored their rights as outlined by UNICEF. As a class, we identified five rights that are especially important to us. The children learnt that young people are ‘rights holders’ while adults are ‘duty bearers’ responsible for upholding those rights. To reflect on their learning, each child drew a representation of themself at add to our charter, this shows their awareness of, as well as agreement with, having these rights.
