Ways of Making 8

Today you are going to be finding the different ways you can make the number 8.

Use the Powerpoint below to Investigate Ways of Making 8.

Now it's your turn ....

 

You are going to be finding all the different ways to make 8. You will need the fishing net baseboard below and 8 fish ( you can use cubes or anything else as the fish too!  Pose problem to the children. 8 fish are swimming in the sea. Some get caught in the fisherman’s net and some are still swimming around?  Get children to count their 8 cubes/fish.

Now  ‘How many different ways can you do this? You have to use all 8 fish. Find different ways to split the 8 fish. Say your number sentence each time. 

E.g.

‘I have 2 fish in the net and 6 fish swimming in the sea. There are 8 fish in total/altogether’

 

Have a go at recording your calculation as a sum or by drawing dots instead just like in the Powerpoint, see if you can find all the number fact for 8. Remember to record all your learning in your home learning books!!
