Reception Autumn Term 2020

In Reception class at Hall Green our main aim during the initial weeks is to ensure that each child feels safe, settled and secure, where they develop positive relationships and bonds with those around them. We understand that this year’s start will be very different, especially as the child is at home in their own settled environment.  But there are some really simple things you can do to prepare your child for the coming year.

There is some helpful information about preparing for and supporting your child in Reception on the Twinkl website. Search ‘Starting School’ to find lots of fun activities!

During the first term in Autumn the focus will be on:

  • Making relationships with adults and children/learning names/being together/social distancing.
  • Getting to know and using a new environment/resources and equipment/tidying up.
  • Using the toilet/washing our hands/blowing our nose/hygiene.
  • Making conversations/listening to each other/taking turns/sharing.

There are some really simple activities you can do at home with your child that are the starting blocks to learning.

  • Practice writing letters, especially their name!
  • Lay the table for dinner counting how many items they need
  • Count how many stairs there are when they go up to bed
  • Play lots of games that involve sharing and taking turns
  • Encourage them to ‘read’ you a story from a book they know

In Reception planning looks very different to other year groups or Key Stages. Although the children do have some discrete lessons of Maths, Writing and Phonics, most learning takes place through play. This is known as continuous provision. The children gets lots of opportunities throughout the day to take part in lots of different activities. We encourage them to be independent as much as possible and choose the order in which they complete them. Lots of learning also takes place outside. Autumn is a wonderful time for the children as they observe the changes all around them.

We know home learning can, at times, be challenging for parents (we are parents too) so we have tried to provide a simplified version of the planning we use in school. We will put our weekly planning online for you every week. Please choose from any of the activities in any order you prefer. We generally do not use lots of worksheets in Reception but where they are used we will of course attach them to the planning.

Please do not feel you have to complete ALL of the activities! We just want to provide you with lots of different ways you can support your child at home if they are unable to attend.

Stay safe!
