Make a Gruffalo crumble at home, just like chocolate cornflake cakes. You will be focusing on the Melting aspect of this. Children will be melting chocolate to make their Gruffalo crumble.
Talk to the children about states of matter. Explain when chocolate is heated, chocolate undergoes a physical change, from a solid to a liquid. As it cools it returns to being a solid. Chocolate melts between 30–40°C which is why chocolate is ‘melt in the mouth’. Use different examples of melting and freezing to encourage thinking. Ask children if they can tell you about other things that melt too.
